Formal schooling reduces the population distribution of outcomes. Certain life paths become normalized. It’s not that everyone’s outcomes become more centered around the original median, everyone becomes centered around the society median.

In other words, school doesn’t just narrow your outcomes, it narrows them to be more like everyone else.
