I learned about the concept of slack through SlateStarCodex. Slack is the ability to not pursue near-term goals. This allows you to reach universal maximums instead of only seeing local maximums. It allows you to avoid the Red Queen race, the pressure of competition.

The gift of slack allows compounding and releases pressure. You can act long-term instead of short-term. You can play positive-sum games instead of zero-sum games.
