There's that famous quote from The Little Prince:
“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
You can't aim at it if you can't see it.
Some people assume they can see it, but they're just looking at a false proxy (e.g. as money is to happiness). So even when they hit the proxy (the money), they miss their target (happiness) and can't figure out why (they're still not happy despite having more money).
