Wu Wei
The usual translation of Wu Wei ( 無為) is effortless action. I usually think of this concept as flawlessly executing tasks without any exertion. But in my jiu-jitsu yesterday, the teacher talked about pushing through exhaustion. He said that in tournaments you have multiple matches and as you progress in the tournaments you become increasingly tired. But your jiu-jitsu skill level shouldn’t decrease because great jiu-jitsu doesn’t require strength, it’s all technique.
Wu Wei doesn’t mean that you’re constantly in sprezzatura, it means that you can always call on your skills, even under the worst conditions.
I’m reminded on how meditation is practice to be mindful in all aspects of life. It’s easier to be mindful in a dark room by yourself, but it’s practice to be mindful in the chaos of the outside world.
