Like violence is the last option of negotiation, control is the last option of coordination. In other words, if it's hard to coordinate the result is someone taking control and organizing. But now we have tools that allow us to self-organize so central control is not necessary. We can coalesce around the open segments of people's schedules because it's easier to see them rather than dictating when something needs to happen and forcing them to schedule around those occurrences.
For sure coordination and control are often related, but there are many specific instances where they are not related too or at least only loosely related. eg. once your kid goes to school, the school may not control you but it'll have its own agenda and norms. I'm also thinking of schelling points, which can arise through self-organization and not be due to central control.
yeah, exactly, schelling points! Because of technology, schelling points are easier to find so coordination can become more decentralized and less controlled.
It's easier to homeschool now so you don't have to be subject to school schedules. And if you work at home your job has less control over your schedule. The more you can coordinate on your own the less control the system has on you.
The invention of time zones was mainly to solve coordination problems. So perhaps coordination is a more apt model than control?
Maybe coordination and control are related?
